Day 4 - A letter to the person who has influenced you the most

Dear Jenny,

Besides Mom, you are the first and biggest influence in my life. From the moment I was born, I had a big sister to look out for me, to push me in the right direction, and to make sure that I succeeded. Since you were only a year older than me, we were practically twins. We not only looked alike, we also dressed a like. We did everything together. When you were in kindergarten, you would always save your chocolate milk and bring it home for me. It’s no surprise that my favorite drink is chocolate milk. And when you first went to school, you didn’t know any English. All the other kids made fun of you. So everyday you would come home and teach me what you learned in ESL. By the time I started school, I could speak it perfectly.

You taught me how to cook. I might not be able to make a lot of things, but I know how to make pot stickers and spaghetti from you. And people seem to like it quite a lot. You even got me into arts and crafts. You are what drove me to do well in grade school, middle school, high school, and now college. Your grades were always stellar. It was always my goal to do as well as you, if not better. I could have done it on my own, but the friendly competition gave me extra motivation. Now my new goal is to get a job right after gradation, just like you did.

A lot of the things that I’ve tried in my life, I tried because you tried first. You made it safe, not so scary. I knew I could do things because if I messed up, you would be there to help me out. There isn’t a single person’s good opinion I value more than yours, even Mom’s. Because we grew up at the same time. We’ve experienced the same things. You understand me better than anyone else. Thank you for helping shape me into the person that I am today. Kathy and I are very lucky to have a big sister like you.

Love, Arlene
